If it's an item that can't be a fraction or stack to more than one item such as swords or pickaxes, that item is lost upon death. The only exception is the compass. When the player respawns, a gravestone will spawn at the location of death, which can be seen on the compass if the gravestone is in the same cave layer as the player. Retrieving those items will require the player to break the gravestone.
