WELCOME TO THE DEVLOG!
On a regular basis, we’ll be making posts here that reveal the game’s mechanics and give you a glimpse into the post-apocalyptic world of the Interregnum! As always, we’d love to hear what you think, and answer any questions you have… as long as they don’t constitute spoilers, of course!
So sit back and enjoy as we start off with…
CHALLENGES
In the ruined world of the Interregnum, the laws of both civilization and nature have been savagely shattered. The few survivors are bled dry on the shards, pushed to their limits each and every day. When they’re not fighting over what’s left of their near-future society, they face fateful struggles in the form of Challenges.
These can be scavenging from a particularly tricky locale, braving some kind of danger, trying to save a fellow survivor’s life… if there’s uncertainty involved in an action, it’s a Challenge!

During event dialogues, options marked by the icon of a D20 will lead to Challenges. These correspond to one of the six primary statistics:

Strength: Challenges requiring exertion or violence.

Agility: Challenges concerning speed, precision, or stealth.

Endurance: Challenges in hostile conditions, or amidst other sources of constant stress.

Intelligence: Challenges involving deduction, perception, plans, or technology.

Willpower: Challenges where survivors must assert themselves– or face their fears.

Charisma: Challenges involving negotiation with other survivors.
You choose which of your allies will attempt the Challenge, and their corresponding stat value will be added to a dieroll to determine success or failure. Choose wisely, however; it may seem logical to rely upon a single skilled ally, but each attempt incurs fatigue, and the one attempting the Challenge will bear the brunt of failure. You may instead wish to put forward someone less experienced… or someone more expendable.

Success in Challenges brings additional rewards, while Failure results in penalties– which vary from light to punishing. Sometimes you simply miss out on what success would’ve granted. Other times, you risk the well-being of the ally attempting the Challenge, or that of the entire group.
At the very least, attempting the Challenge will train the relevant stat, so even failure can bear fruit.

Yet sometimes, it can feel like failure is inescapable…
But the False Prophet stands above other survivors, set apart for reasons beyond their understanding. Unseen entities watch, and warp the world with their presence. Exposure to impossibilities leaves lingering traces of influence.
Probability bends around you, events shift, and this lets you beat the odds for otherwise impossible Challenges!
By exposing yourself to Anomalies scattered throughout the world, you become charged with Anomalous Essence, which lets you roll additional dice during a Challenge.

Essence used in this way can only be regained by interacting with dangerous Anomalies… as always, the only way to mitigate risk somewhere is to accept it elsewhere.
Still, when it’s the difference between life and death, anything and everything must be taken advantage of. Such is life in the Interregnum.
