Day 3 of the Norway terrain production. I decided to redo the terrain textures as I couldn't get them to look right when either up close or far away. It was always one or the other! So, instead of using imagery based on satellite photography I decided to try a method I 1st developed for Stealth Fighter D.E.X. It uses noise maps created in Photoshop to give a basic flat colour detail and texturing. You can then use several iterations to create interesting patterns. The main benefit is that the texture holds up just as well at 1m as it does at 1000m. It obviously doesn't have the incidental detail of satellite imagery but it also doesn't visibly repeat which is nice! It also looks very clean a clear and is an aesthetic that I actually really like. Here's a distant view towards a high mountain without any trees etc. I also added in some very basic trees to see how everything would work together and the results are, I think, really good. The trees are place holders but I won't be going super detailed on the trees as I'd prefer more trees than good looking trees! They should look pretty reasonable though! In these two images there are around 15,000 trees being rendered together with the ocean. Fps was still over 200fps @ 1080p on my 2080ti / i9 9900k!!
