Recently, James showed you how to acquire a set of awesome and iconic X-01 power armor in Fallout 4. Today, I'll direct you to something a bit more frivolous but, to my mind, just as important: all of the extra hair styles, face paints, and facial tattoos available in the game, how to find them, and how to put them on.

Fallout 4's character creator is pretty good, but it's not the end of the line in terms of determining your character's looks. Once you leave the vault you can keep tweaking your features, hair styles, and facial markings in a couple of different ways: by finding special vendors, by locating magazines that give you extra options, and by, well, cheating. This guide will walk you through all those options so you'll always look your best. Or silliest. Or scariest. Your call.

Skip to the last page if you'd prefer to just cheat. We won't judge you.

Face paint and grime

If you're looking to freshen your looks or dirty your face, you can visit a facial surgeon named Doc Crocker in Diamond City Market. Right next to Doctor Sun's outdoor office, enter the door marked Mega Surgery Center. In addition to letting you change your physical features, just like you do in the character creator, Crocker gives you access to face paint and grime. And there's a ton of different options.

Face paint is perfect for those of you who want to blend in and look like a raider, or at least like a real badass. You don't have to choose between the different paints, either: you can enable as many as you like at the same time. Face paint also comes in different colors, just like makeup.

You can use the same surgeon to add grime as well, which includes coal soot, dirt, dust, mud, blood, and other smudges and splotches that will reflect your numerous trips and trials in the wastes. Grime can be mixed and matched with face paint, so you can look both terrifying and filthy.

Barbers

Next, hairstyles. You can visit a barber in the game at any time to change your hairdo, and they give you access to a few new ones that aren't a part of the character creator, such as mohawks for both male and female characters (as seen above), and a couple other options (below). There's also a smattering of new facial hair options for dudes available from barbers.

The easiest barber to find is in Diamond City Market, and there's also one in Vault 81. In Diamond City Market, Look for a big sign that says Super Salon and talk to John, the young man wearing the varsity jacket.

Extra Hairstyles

There are also two issues of a magazine called Le Coiffe you can find in the world that allow you additional hairstyles not available anywhere else. One is perhaps the greatest hairstyle ever created. It's called the Megaton and it makes you look like you think about atomic bombs all day. Which you probably do.

You can find this issue of Le Coiffe magazine in Fallon's Department store. If you head south from Diamond City and run for a while, you'll eventually come across a three-story building with a big Fallon's sign on it. The magazine is on a round table in the smallest room on the top floor. There are other things in other rooms, so I'd bring a gun of some sort. A big one. Here's the location (you can click the upper right corner of these images to enlarge):

The second issue of LeCoiff is in the Charlestown Laundry, which is just southeast of Bunker Hill. It's not marked on the map so it's not easy to find, but below is the location and what it looks like, best spotted by the red truck out front and a couple of small dry cleaning signs on the building. You'll find Le Coiffe in a laundry basket sitting on top of one of the washing machines. It provides you with a lovely, towering beehive called The Hornet's Nest. Both of these hairstyles can be used by male or female characters.

To activate these new hairstyles, just visit barber. Or, keep reading and I'll tell you how to change your hairstyle whenever you want.

On the next page, let's get into facial tattoos.

Tattoos

There are five issues of a magazine called Taboo Tattoos hidden in Fallout 4, and five tats—four for your face and one for your neck—that come with them. As with face paint and grime, you can activate the tattoos by visiting the surgeon in Diamond City. Here's where to find the magazines.

Lucky Clover

This is the only cheek tattoo (see above). Head to Mass Pike Tunnel East, and head there with a large weapon and a can-do attitude because good lord it's a supremely nasty place full of horrible, horrible things. Once you're underground, head into the southern tunnels. When you spot a small room with a power armor station, look around for a couple skeletons. Next to one, along with some junk on the floor, you'll find the issue of Taboo Tattoos.

Eagle

This is a pretty sweet tattoo that covers the front of your neck (you can see it in the image up top). You'll find it in Concord (I assume you don't need directions to Concord). On the main street, look for a red truck. Behind it is an alleyway, and in the alley there's a cellar door marked Concord Civic Access. Head inside, and on your way down the stairs you'll pass a small room. Next to a steamer trunk you'll find the magazine.

Radiation Skull

This forehead tattoo featuring a radiation symbol with a skull in the center can be acquired at the Irish Pride Industries Shipyard, which is dead north of Bunker Hill. Inside the main building, there's a ship. Inside the ship, there's a metal lunch table with a lit lantern sitting on it. The magazine is next to it.

Bad Luck Horseshoe

You'll find this in Vault 81, which is west of Diamond City. Look for a barbershop on the lower floor, it's marked with a sign. The magazine is on a small table inside. While you're there, you can also get a haircut.

Nautical Anchor

This one is easy. Head to Thicket Excavations, a quarry due east of Red Rocket Truck Stop, very close to where you begin the game. At the quarry, on the southern edge of the pit, there are three small trailers. In the trailer closest to the pit, it's on the desk inside.

On the final page, a way to make changes to your looks, hair, paint, and tattoos without having to actually visit a barber or surgeon!

Cheating

Okay, let's say you want to change your looks or hairstyles but don't feel like making a special trip to have it done. Maybe you're not welcome in Diamond City. Maybe you just think you should be able to change your looks whenever you want. (You're right, you should.) I've got you covered. You can open the character creation utility anytime you like using a console code. Just follow these steps:

  • Find a chair in a quiet well-lit area, preferably somewhere outside in the sun. I'd suggest a place like Sanctuary, where you probably won't be disturbed, and you can even use the workbench to build or carry a chair out into the street.
  • Sit in the chair, switch to third-person view, and turn the camera so you're looking directly at your character's face from as close as you can get without entering back into first-person mode.
  • Save your game. You may make changes and realize you don't like them.
  • Open the console (using the tilde ~ key).
  • Type the following, without the quotation marks: 'showlooksmenu player 1' and press enter. Hit the tilde key again to close the console.

Boom! You're now in the same character creation menu as you were in the vault, plus you've got access to the new hairstyles from the barber shop, plus the grease and face paint.

xQxzJT0iih0t.878x0.Z-Z96KYq.jpg

It's a little harder to use, since your character will be engaging in idle animations and you're not zoomed in as close as you should be. However, it's perfect for swapping hairstyles and adding paint without having to go anywhere. When you're done, just exit the menu.

Note: the hairstyles and tattoos added by the magazines won't be there unless you've collected and read the magazines, so you'll still need to do that.

More cheating

So, you don't feel like going out and collecting those magazines, either, but you still want the tattoos and hairstyles that are contained within them? I totally understand. Let's use the console again. But this is a big huge honking cheat, so don't say I didn't warn you.

  • Open the console by pressing ~. Type (with no quotes) 'coc qasmoke' and press enter.

You may have noticed you've been teleported into a weird dark room with a bunch of things in it. Some of those things are footlockers, and one of those footlockers has every book in the game inside it. Scroll through the list and take the Le Coiffe and Taboo Tattoo books with you. Try not to look at anything else in the room because there's a lot of other things. As in: every item in the game is in that room.

iwFz6pH4ccqu.878x0.Z-Z96KYq.jpg

Congratulations! You've got all the hairstyles and tattoos, and you know how to implement them without visiting a barber or surgeon. Unfortunately, you're trapped in this weird room forever since there's no exit and you can't fast travel from it to escape.

Even more cheating

So you're saying you don't want to spend the rest of your character's life in a weird room trying on hair? Fair enough!

  • Open the console again, type 'coc sanctuaryext' and press enter.

You'll be teleported back to Sanctuary with the hairstyle books and whatever else you stole from that room. Which, I'm sure, is nothing. I'm sure you only stole those few books. Right?

Enjoy your new look!
