Remember when Konami wouldn't let Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima attend the 2015 Game Awards to receive recognition for his work on Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain? Next month, the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences is having a show of its own in Las Vegas, and now that Kojima no longer works for Konami, you can be sure he'll be there to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
Hideo Kojima s career-defining works have shaped much of how the video game industry approaches cinematic storytelling and player engagement, AIAS President Martin Rae said. As one of the most well-loved and well-respected designers of our time, it is a great honor for the Academy to induct him into our Hall of Fame. Hideo is a game creator whose eyes have always looked towards the future, and we look forward to his thoughts on the D.I.C.E. Summit stage.
The AIAS said that Kojima set the trend for stealth action games with Metal Gear in 1987, and continued to push boundaries with sequels that continue to amaze players today. It also noted, I guess for those who haven't been paying attention, that MGS5 will be his final game in the series. Kojima will be the 21st inductee into the AIAS Hall of Fame, joining famed industry figures including Shigeru Miyamoto, Sid Meier, John Carmack, RIchard Garriott, Michael Morhaime, and Gabe Newell.
The Hall of Fame award will be presented by none other than Guillermo Del Toro, his partner on the Silent Hills project that Konami killed, to much lamentation, last spring. So the speeches should be interesting. Kojima will receive his award on February 18.
